Two different approaches to the Miami Beach boutique hotel

الأحد، 13 مارس 2016 / لا يوجد تعليقات

MIAMI BEACH — After John Pritzker's Geolo Capital in 2013 bought Thompson Hotels' stake in Commune Hotels, the parent company that controlled the Thompson brand, the former stewards of Thompson went on to form Sixty Hotels.

The two brands went their separate ways — or, as much as two brands can in the competitive boutique/lifestyle hotel market. But they've both landed in Miami Beach in the past year: The Thompson Miami Beach opened last November, and Sixty opened the Sixty Nautilus last month.

I stayed a night in each property during a visit to South Florida earlier this month and discovered some similarities, as you might expect from two luxury-minded, boutique properties in a town that caters to a sophisticated, international, wealthy, beach- and art-loving clientele. (The town's ultra-high season, Art Basel Miami Beach, opened this week.)

Both are built into historical, oceanfront buildings. Like many luxe Miami hotels, they have chef-driven restaurants and bars with craft cocktails, and both have killer pools, cabanas, no-expense-spared landscaping and interior design that can easily be the backdrop for leisure guests or fashionable parties.

Both properties are spotless and had excellent, friendly service.
Yet, the two properties are distinctive. As Sixty (and Thompson) founder Jason Pomeranc said earlier this month: "There are a lot of subtle things that go into making these hotels."

He also pointed to geography. The Nautilus opened in prime South Beach territory, with the Shore Club, Raleigh, SLS and Delano hotels for neighbors. The Thompson is in the quieter "midbeach" area. (This location is one to watch, as posh hotels such as the One and Edition have continued to move north on Collins Avenue.)

The Thompson leans toward a vibe that it calls "vibrant, bohemian-beach chic." The Nautilus palette, meanwhile, is like that of a swimming pool in a Mediterranean resort getaway: white, navy, cerulean and cream colors mixed with natural wood tones.

Las Vegas Best Bets 2016

/ لا يوجد تعليقات

When the dust settled from last year’s rush of resort openings, revamps and rebrands, the Las Vegas hospitality landscape was once again transformed. Thus, while my 2015 edition of Best Bets is foremost a compendium of outstanding products, it’s also a tribute to Vegas-style evolution.

Best Serene Retreat on the Strip: Delano
In a striking transformation from TheHotel at Mandalay Bay, the completely renewed, 42-story, 1,117-suite Delano is a South Beach-meets-Southwest fusion that turned what was a respectable yet unexciting convention property into an atmospheric boutique hotel. From the chic and stunning entryway to the understated-but-elegant room decor, the nonsmoking, nongaming Delano is a luxurious and tranquil oasis within Mandalay Bay’s busy mega-complex. The zen-like serenity of the public areas, enhanced by perfect lighting, attractive scents, comfortable furniture and warm colors, welcomes us back from the hectic Strip.

Best Guilty Pleasure: Machine Guns Vegas
With the dubious yet impressive distinction of achieving what is possibly the pinnacle of political incorrectness, Machine Guns Vegas does all sorts of damage, both virtual and physical. And while the Seal Team 6 Experience enables guests to fire four intimidating weapons at the indoor range, the Just Divorced package stands out for its sheer chutzpah: The ex and four girlfriends shooting holes into wedding memorabilia with a pink assault rifle. For $499, what could be more cathartic?

Best Dim Sum on the Strip: Noodles
Although Hong Kong-style, dim sum pushcarts aren’t exactly ubiquitous on the Strip, you’d still expect sticker shock along with your dumplings at Noodles, a rich-looking, pan-Asian noodle house inside the Bellagio. But what you get is authentic and delicious dim sum such as crab meat and vegetable dumplings and roast duck pastry that rival Chinatown’s best, at a price you can live with. Note: Dim sum is only available Fridays through Sundays.

Best Place to See and Be Seen: Giada
Caesars Entertainment bet big when it rebuilt Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall (formerly the Barbary Coast) into the Cromwell, a 188-room boutique hotel on the hottest corner of the Strip. And a big part of that bet rested on the shoulders of TV chef Giada de Laurentiis, whose modern Italian menu at her eponymous restaurant features her signature lemon spaghetti and chicken marsala meatballs. But it’s the drop-dead gorgeous room, great people-watching and striking, panoramic views that really top off the experience.

Best Aesthetic Experience on the Strip: The Cosmopolitan
In a city where form often overwhelms function, it’s refreshing to experience an elegant realization of an artistic aesthetic in a Strip resort. With an eclectic, public-area art collection, striking architectural design, thick art tomes in each room, stunning lobby video columns and spectacular vistas from its unique terraces, theCosmopolitan transcends the over-the-top glitz so common in Las Vegas. Quite simply, it’s beautiful.

Dispatch: An American in Paris

Travel Weekly contributor Jenny Hart was in Paris after the city was attacked. Her report follows.
I had just boarded my flight to Paris when the messages started coming through. “Where are you? What’s happening? ARE YOU OKAY?”
It was Friday, Nov. 13, and the terrorist attacks that would take 129 lives were underway in France’s capital city.
Nothing was mentioned during the 7-hour flight. I wondered what the airline staff knew.
I scanned the heartbreaking headlines as we disembarked and prepared myself for absolute chaos at Charles de Gaulle Airport. What I encountered was almost more disconcerting: complete silence. The customs officer wordlessly took my passport, stamped it, and shoved it back at me. I was on an equally quiet street just moments later, the loudest noise the buzz being my cell phone and its incoming flow of concerned messages.
When I arrived at my accommodations — the Idol Hotel, a lovely music-themed boutique property in the 8th arrondissement — I was greeted with an apologetic smile: “Welcome to Paris. I’m sorry this is the day you have to come.”
Similarly, later that day when a cafe barista realized I was American, he shook his head and said earnestly in English, “I hope you are still able to enjoy my city while you are here.”
I felt terrible guilt being apologized to, as if the experience of a tainted vacation could ever be worse than having one’s home attacked. But I suppose to truly excel in hospitality, the patron has to be put first. And the service I received that day, at the hotel and the various venues I visited, was nothing short of exceptional. I was humbled by how serious the French took those responsibilities during such a perilous time.
The streets were nearly empty the entire day. Even in heavily populated areas, crowds were sparse. Paris, normally so beautiful and bustling, felt unshakably eerie. The Eiffel Tower mourned with its city, looking like a sullen, hulking mass in its blacked-out state. During my 30-minute walk home from dinner, I must have passed more than two dozen heavily armed police officers patrolling the streets. But I didn’t pass anyone else.

Airiness, authenticity: Anguilla's Zenaida villa

/ لا يوجد تعليقات

Travel sellers looking for opportunities to put together special-interest groups don't often consider villas, unless the group consists of family members or friends.

One villa in Anguilla offers an opportunity relatively unusual to private homes in the islands: the ability to host a group of up to 14 people on one property in several separate living areas.

Zenaida Beach and Tennis Estate is perched on a cliff right above Sandy Hill Bay. A secluded swath of the white-sand beach is directly accessible by stairs from the property.

The estate itself is built over 3 acres of tropical gardens where a 17th-century Dutch fort once stood. While many Anguillan villas trend toward a modern decor, Zenaida has an old Caribbean feel, owing to spacious grounds and gardens and open-air spaces that let the Caribbean breeze flow through rooms decorated with wood and wicker furniture and terra-cotta floors.
